Fun Food

When you’re hungry, it can be fun to make your own snack! Ask a parent or other grown-up to come with you to the kitchen to make one of these silly snacks. Remember to always have a parent help you when you’re in the kitchen. Some things in a kitchen are hot or sharp, so a grown-up needs to be in charge of them.

Does your family have a fun snack you like to make? Send it to healthykansas@kdheks.gov. We may post your recipe on our website.

APPLE SMILES

  1. Ask a grown-up to core and slice 1 apple.
  2. Spread reduced fat cream cheese or peanut butter on apple slices. Place mini marshmallows around the edge of one like teeth.
  3. Add 2 apple slices together, put on a plate with skin side showing and eat!

BAGS OF BUGS

  1. Ask a grown-up to help you put 2 graham crackers in a baggie and seal it.
  2. Crush the graham crackers with your hands until they feel like sand.
  3. Add your very own "bugs" to the sand, like carob chips or raisins!

ICY POPS

  1. Ask a grown-up to help you blend 1 cup orange juice, 1 cup pineapple juice, and 1 cup pineapple chunks.
  2. Drop raspberries, blueberries or kiwi slices into small paper cups. Pour the blended juice into the cups over the fruit.
  3. Add a popsicle stick to the cup, cover and freeze!

SILLY SANDWICHES

  1. Ask a grown-up to help you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or a turkey and cheese sandwich.
  2. Use raisins, Cheerios, shredded carrots, banana slices or cucumber slices to make silly faces on top of your sandwich!
